Man Of The Match = Martin O'Neill. Exactly how he wanted this match to go.

Echoing the sentiments. Everything about this game was fugly. Aaron Lennon really provided the only spark in this game. I'll take the point, fuck it. That late goal vs. Stoke a couple of weeks ago gets bigger every week. I was so pissed about that result at the time, but now that point is what has us in 3rd for the moment.

Just to add a little bit of a nitpick, Bale completely out of control there in the 89th minute. He had Defoe (I believe) right next to him. It was ostensibly a 2-on-1. Not only did he not get even a decent chance, but he got himself hurt.
And if Sandro is on the pitch next match, I'm going to throw up a little bit.

A point isnt going to cut it.   We have no margin for error. The team was sleepwalking through this one. It was a dreadful performance. It was an injustice that either team got a point.

Horrible game and no room for error now but i'm not heartbroken at the result. Not sure if this is a point gained or two lost given how mediocre, negative and dispassionate Sunderland were.

While I posted earlier about Rogers' starting line-up yesterday, I've got to wonder what 'Arry was thinking. I can only presume he wanted to stay in the game for the first 70 and try to win it at the death given his line-up and substitutions. After the first half and how congested things were, I can't understand why Lennon wasn't on for the start of the second half at least.

Sandro has looked poor for weeks and, at this point, I'd prefer Livermore if we start 2 holding MFers (although I don't see any reason to for the rest of the fixtures unless, down the road, 1 point guarantees CL football.)

What a frustrating match, the complete opposite of last week, chippy game against a chippy team. Another Chris Foy gem. S'land defender waiving his arms around like a teapot in the box, nothing called. Foy lets them stall a full minute on every free kick at the end, and to top it off, lets Bale get mauled on a fly-in tackle on a breakaway, not even a foul called let alone a flag. And HARRY WHAT GAME ARE YOU WATCHING?? The whole world knew he needed to take Sandro off at halftime. And...WHAT does he have against Defoe??

Frustrating.

Rob, don't disagree with the majority of the post, but Bale was at fault there, if it's the play I'm thinking. No foul there at all, imo. That was a play he should have been a little more aware of his surroundings.

True, the announcers did say he should've passed, though they also said it's a foul that's called in the league now; guy went straight into him.

A plethora of ill-conceived passes on our end throughout the game. Too many times they resorted to long-ball, low-percentage passes as if we were a counterattacking team and not the one that had 71% of the possession.

On a sour note, we haven't won away since Norwich and we'll probably need 3 points in at least 2 of QPR, Bolton or Villa.

yep. that was shite.

they were there to be beaten and we weren't able to step up. as for tactics, just yelling "run abahhhht a bit" and "awaaaaaay" is bollocks.

having said that, i thought that would be our trickiest remaining away game, so not losing is always a plus. but we just can't afford to keep playing like that.

if we don't stuff norwich convincingly on monday we can probably forget third.

on a side note, i was in west london today visiting friends (my first visit to london in 5 years) and it was interesting that the most popular slogan from chelscum fans after their game was "we hate totenham, we hate tottehnham" i was drunk enough to want to shout "we love tottenham" back, but not drunk enough to want to take on 10 guys all alone. found it interesting though that we are that important to them.

Shit contest, but I have to admit, that sequence where either side gave each other the ball back and forth in the center circle was good for a laugh. Highlight of the game.

You cant have the penny and the bun. You cant expect to tighten up away from home with a 5 man midfield against a team quite happy with a draw and expect entertainment.

Don't understand how HJR can whine about Sunderland being defensive when he sets up with Parker and Sandro.

Agree. It wasn't pretty, and a lot of the players were off their game. But a point away at Sunderland is far from bad. Would be interesting to hear what the 442 gung ho merchants would have to say if we lost an entertaining game.

I would have preferred that. If you'd rather watch your team draw boring nils-nils, I think you're watching the wrong team.

Anyway that's not the point. We should have brought lennon on for Sandro at half time and the next sub should have been defoe after about 60 mins. Harry didn't change it enough, quickly enough. When we have a team park the bus, we need invention and creativity, and tactically Harry doesn't have that.

i have to disagree with you, samd.  it would be much better for us to focus on something positive like finishing third instead of not finishing fifth.

shame that Arsewank won, but i was always planning on them beating QPR and losing to city/maybe drawing city, so it's still fairly on track...

we're two points behind them.  their next six matches:

wolves (a)
wigan (h)
chelsea (h)
stoke (a)
norwich (h)
west brom (a)

our next six:

norwich (h)
QPR (a)
blackburn (h)
bolton (a)
villa (a)
fulham (h)

if they take 16 points from those matches, we'll finish behind them...but i can't see them winning 5 of 6 (this is the same team that lost to QPR, of course) and drawing chelsea, as they would have to to get at least 16 points.  it's not like we have an easy run in, but if we win the next 3, we'll be in a great spot.

by the way, we have to hope that villa are out of relegation trouble by the time we play them...not looking great on that front (stoke, united, sunderland, bolton, and west brom before we visit villa park).

i dont think its too unrealistic to expect us to actually win 5 of the last 6 - the team just has to be motivated enough to do that. that SHOULD clinch CL qualification.
