Watching the Liv-City match, it reinforces that the biggest thing(s) holding us back are our lack of game-changing speed and attacking depth. I wouldn't want to imagine what would happen if we sold our no. 10 and then went up against elite competition. Liverpool is by no means a complete package and almost blew a 4-1 lead at home - and it remains to be seen how much VVD will solve their long-standing defensive issues - but that was a statement win by them, in a match that could've put us back into the Top 4.

I wouldn't trade our attacking four for anybody's, and although Son is quick, after years of Lennon, Bale, and Walker, we have no one to blow by defenders anymore. I think it would make a significant difference if we had just one player to come on late and cause problems for a back line with heavy legs, while making the occasional start to spell a key attacker or two down the stretch.

It is unfortunate that through some very smart decisions over the past 5 years we are on the cusp on cracking the elite for good but our continuing financial imparity with the elite is what will make us stumble at the last hurdle.

You have Chelsea, City and United pulling even further away by acquiring/trading players like Sanchez, Mkhi, Mahrez, maybe even Bale and Ronaldo and we cannot even dream of being in the same conversations. We still have glaring gaps, but the best we can hope for is that we continue with the current team and hope they all stay for another season, while adding one or two decent acquisitions. When if ever will we compete for the true world class player(s) that we need to win titles!?

...or if he was sick and we faced a relegation candidate.

Maybe instead of putting our squad on a flying petri dish during flu season, we should've stayed home and practiced getting shots on goal?

Also, it's preposterous that the sub we make while pushing for a winner is sending on Wanyama. Our failure to bring in support for Eriksen, or any functioning attacker with speed, is confirmation that ownership prioritizes team performance 3rd behind profit and new stadium. Everyone else has improved, the crosstown team is about to lose their best player but looks to end up coming out better in the exchange of players, and we're here asking to finish 6th. I think these next 2-3 weeks are the make-or-break portion of our season, and I'd be surprised if we're planning to bring in anyone.

Unfortunately with this financial balancing act, we will very likely be going into the new stadium with no CL and our top players agitating for a move this summer. On the bright side Levy will recover a large portion of the stadium cost with the transfer fees.

Lamela isn't a perfect back up for Eriksen but he is always going to be one of the front 4.   It seems to be taking time for him to regain full match fitness.   Assume he'll play 90 v Newport.

He'd emerged as a must-start by the end of 2015-16, but with the rise of Son, it'll be interesting to see how he fits into the rotation going forward. While not a perfect back up for Eriksen, I think he could fill that role nicely to an extent that no one on the squad comes close to doing now, plus get some starts to rest Son or Dele. The biggest thing holding us back has been our inability to bring on someone of the caliber of Son/Dele/Lamela for the last 20-30 minutes.
